Margaret Rowell

I first learned about Margaret Rowell from my former teacher, Scott Kluksdahl. After I expressed an enthusiastic interest in pedagogy, he showed me a video of a passionate older woman explaining the cello in the most beautiful way imaginable. From that moment, I was captivated by her teaching method. I quickly devoured anything I could find about her, but most of the materials were biographical and lacked depth on her pedagogical techniques. To address this gap, I embarked on a qualitative research study to explore her teaching methods in detail. I am currently synthesizing and disseminating my findings, making sure to share the knowledge of this spectacular pedagogue. I find that Margaret Rowell's approach aligns perfectly with my commitment to inclusive pedagogy.

Inclusive Classroom Pedagogy

Inclusive classroom pedagogy, with a specific focus on people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community, is a major component of my research. As a fierce advocate for historically excluded populations, I frequently present conference sessions that highlight potential barriers to music education for educators and equip music teachers with strategies to create welcoming and inclusive classrooms for every student.

In my role as an artist educator, I recognize that the music education field has significant room for growth in this area. I am committed to being among the educators who actively research and advocate for access and inclusive practices in learning spaces, ensuring that all students feel valued and supported.
